Get ready to embark on an exhilarating journey of strategy and logic with Dendoku, the exciting new multi-player tile board game invented by Dennis Gagnon. Designed for 2-8 players, Dendoku combines the familiar concept of Sudoku with a unique twist, making it a thrilling and competitive game for individuals or teams.
From Inspiration to Creation
Dendoku was born out of a passion for challenging board games that require both logical thinking and strategic decision-making. Dennis Gagnon, the mastermind behind this innovative game, wanted to create a fresh and captivating experience that would engage players of all ages. By infusing the concept of Sudoku with a competitive edge, he succeeded in developing Dendoku.
How to Play: Strategic Moves and Scoring Opportunities
The objective of Dendoku is simple: be the player or team with the highest score at the end of the game. To achieve this, players must employ defensive strategies to deny their opponents scoring opportunities. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to play:
1. Setting up the Game: Each player draws a tile from the bag, and the player with the highest numbered tile plays first. If there is a tie, tied players continue drawing until one has the highest numbered tile. All tiles are then returned to the bag and mixed.
2. Tile Distribution: The first player draws five tiles from the bag and places them on their rack. The remaining players do the same. Players should always have five tiles before and after their turn until all tiles have been drawn.
3. Playing Tiles: The first player chooses a tile from their rack and places it on any square on the board. It is advantageous to play tiles you have multiples of, increasing your chances of playing tiles later in the game. After playing a tile, draw a new one to restore your tile count to five.
4. Strategic Placement: The next player takes their turn by playing a tile of their choice on any open square on the board. Avoid placing tiles adjacent to or on the same line as a tile already played in a section of nine squares to prevent opponents from scoring.
5. Scoring Opportunities: As the game progresses, players strive to complete lines of three tiles within sections. This allows them to score points. However, a tile may not be placed when a tile of the same number occupies a square in the same section or row vertically or horizontally.
6. Dead Squares and Continuation: If a square cannot be played due to a conflict with a previously played tile, a black blocker tile is placed to indicate a dead square. Play continues until no player can make a move.
7. Final Scoring: Players’ scores are tallied, with 20 points deducted for each remaining tile on their rack. The player with the highest total wins. In the event of a tie, the player with the fewest remaining tiles is declared the winner.
